About the Current FCCO Building

Our current building was designed by John Galen Howard, the founder of the School of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley. This is the third building that the Congregation built.

The upper tier of stained glass windows in the Sanctuary and Balcony where designed by noted stained glass artist Willimena Ogterop. Her daughter Eveline Ogtrerop Krimgold wrote this wonderful biography for the Church and it was recently rescued from the flood.  (Click here to see the individual pages from that manuscript.)The five large windows on the West Wall of the Sanctuary came from the preceeding Sanctuary located at 12th and Broadway in downtown Oakland. The windows on the southeast and southwest walls and the Narthax stairway come from various sources and where purchased for our current building my many families of First Congregational Church of Oakland. The Hamm Window underwent a complete restoration in 2017.

In 1966, Mrs. Schwarz and the Women's League documented the Walking Tour given monthly. This manuscript is a valuable catalogue of the religious symbolism represented in the building itself.
